Orange Bud vs Orange Bud 2.0: what’s the genetic difference?

Orange Bud is a fully proven, highly consistent classic 1980s sativa Skunk selection with bold ripe-orange/citrus aroma, fiery orange hairs, easy XL yields, numerous cannabis cups and an uplifting cerebral high.  An established bestseller for several decades, but that didn’t stop the Dutch Passion geneticists from attempting a next-gen version!

Orange Bud 2.0 took the original Orange Bud mother and crossed her with Mimosa.

After expert selection, backcrossing and stabilisation the taste and aroma have increased in dankness with THC peaks a few percentage points higher. Even after Orange Bud 2.0 was introduced, sales of original Orange Bud remain strong with huge numbers of repeat buyers who love the consistent quality and reliably heavy production. There are no plans to remove such a popular original classic. But Orange Bud 2.0 is a genuinely special upgrade which many prefer. This side-by-side comparative grow shows you how these two heavyweights compare. With the same grower, the same grow room and the same grow style this grows gives a detailed view of both varieties

Grow setup and conditions

Both plants shared identical conditions making for a particularly a fair comparison. The same tent, light, environment, nutrients, container size and veg length:

• Indoor grow with AC Infinity LED (approx. 270–280 W).
• Same tent, environment and light schedule.
• Substrate: 2/3 Plagron Lightmix + 1/3 coco fibre + dolomite lime + mycorrhiza.
• Final pots: 14–15 L (3gal).
• Same Plagron nutrient line (Terra Grow / Terra Bloom, Power Roots, Pure Zym, CalMag, Power Buds, Green Sensation).
• SCROG net, topping/LST/defoliation and lollipopping as needed.
• Flowering switch (to a 12/12 cannabis light cycle) at the same time.
• Total cycle: 100 days seed to harvest.

Difficulty was rated normal for both, with no particular issues.

Vegetative growth, Orange Bud vs Orange Bud 2.0

Orange Bud grew faster and taller early on. By the end of week 4 it reached around 21 cm and was topped on day 25. It filled out well with LST and developed a solid canopy. 

Orange Bud 2.0 stayed notably more compact in early veg (around 13 cm at week 4). It focused on root development with short internodes, showed strong vitality after transplant, and was topped later (around day 32). Both plants responded well to training and were ready for the SCROG net by the end of veg.

Flowering stretch and plant structure – almost identical SCROG growth

Both stretched substantially after the 12/12 flip and filled the SCROG net well. Orange Bud reached roughly 48 cm by the second week of bloom. Orange Bud 2.0 stretched to around 44 cm in the same period.

Final heights stabilised around 53–55 cm for both under the net. Structure remained manageable with continued weaving, selective defoliation and lollipopping (removal of lower branches deemed unlikely to produce much bud). Both stayed healthy despite a mild calcium deficiency noted mid-flower (not uncommon under intense LED).

Bud development and resin production

The original Orange Bud produced attractive classic buds with good structure and a pleasant sweet-mandarin scent that intensified later. The strong citrus aroma, high THC levels and vivid orange hairs deliver the high-end appeal that has made her endearingly popular with growers since the 1980’s.

But the modern Orange Bud 2.0 genetics really stood out. Orange Bud 2.0 developed very hard, dense, highly resinous buds with excellent bag appeal and a superior flower-to-leaf ratio. Aroma built earlier and stronger with Orange Bud 2.0 – intensely dank, sweet orange with lemon and mandarin notes. Resin coverage was notably heavier too.

Harvest: how did Orange Bud and Orange Bud 2.0 compare?

Both finished in 100 days and received a perfect 10/10 grower rating. Either option would be a solid choice for any quality-conscious home grower. But the subtle nuanced features of Orange Bud 2.0 make her the pick for the citrus skunk connoisseur:

Orange Bud:

The smell reminds of mandarin with a light sweetness. The flowers turned out very nice. The smoke is very soft… The taste is fruity with a light note of orange/mandarin and a certain spiciness. Very tasty and just like you remember Orange Bud from ‘back then’. The effect is pleasant and a bit weaker, which I personally like a lot.

Orange Bud 2.0:

The flowers smell intensely of orange and lemon. The buds are rock-hard and very resinous. The taste is a bit bitter and like a cocktail of orange, lemon and mandarin — with mandarin standing out most. The effect is strong.

The grower noted that original Orange Bud produced higher yields, while Orange Bud 2.0 delivered denser buds and a stronger citrus profile. Overall, the grower viewed Orange Bud 2.0 as the more beautiful and modern plant, with original Orange Bud ideal for those seeking the slightly less narcotically powerful old-school experience.

Original Orange Bud delivers the fully proven, classic nostalgic experience – slightly less overwhelming potency (which many prefer), the familiar sweet-mandarin character and genuinely impressive yields.

Orange Bud 2.0 upgrades the package with denser, frostier buds, more intense citrus terpenes and stronger potency while keeping the orange soul intact. Yields may not always be quite on the same outrageous level as original Orange Bud, but that doesn’t detract from the classy connoisseur edge of Orange Bud 2.0.
