Kingston Punch’s (Mimosa x Skywalker Haze) forgiving, easy to grow nature and genetic vigour were put to the test. The large, aerated 60 litre fabric containers ensured great levels of root aeration as well as a sizeable nutrient reserve.

The simple, low-maintenance grow produced strong, well-structured plants and high-quality buds without the hard work associated with more complicated grow techniques such as SCROG, topping etc.

A flawless germination stage

All three Kingston Punch feminised seeds germinated rapidly and uniformly. Within four days the seedlings were ready to be transplanted into the Klassman TS3 light soil mix.

Rapid germination, in 4 days they were ready to be added to the substrate.

The 100% germination rate and quick, healthy start set a reassuringly positive tone for the rest of the grow.

Vegetative stage: building a sturdy plant with minimal training

The vegetative growth stage (under 18/6 lighting) lasted 41 days with the plants standing around 80cm tall. This was a longer veg than originally planned due to an unexpected trip. Despite the extended veg, the plants remained manageable. Use of the 60-litre (13 gal) fabric containers helped create a large root system which would support the large final yield.

Branching was modest. But the sturdy main stem, thick branches and strong framework would support heavy blooms later in flower.  “Big.Chalas” practised a hands-off style: the plants were allowed to grow naturally with only light pruning of large fan leaves and lower branches to improve airflow and light penetration. No topping, main-lining or heavy training was applied.

With little branching, but a very strong structure prepared to withstand the weight of large blooms.

Even so, multiple strong bloom points formed. This created what would later prove to be a productive multi-cola structure. The combination of professionally selected parent genetics, quality LED lighting and well-aerated large fabric sack filled with pre-fertilised light soil produced vigorous, healthy plants.

Heavy resin production and colourful late flowering

Flowering took 81 days, during this time the Kingston Punch plants doubled their height eventually reaching 1.65m tall. Stretch occurring mainly in the first three weeks.

After three weeks of bloom the first trichomes were clearly visible and the emerging buds began to swell. Resin production would eventually become outstanding with trichomes coating the buds thoroughly as well as the underside of fan leaves – even in areas that received limited direct light.

In the final weeks the flowers took on an appealing green/violet colouration, creating a striking visual contrast against the heavy frosting of resin.

Nutrient demand was modest, especially considering the large 60-litre (13 gal) grow sacks. Athena Ag was used only during flowering and the pre-charged Klassman TS3 soil supplied all the nutrition required during veg. Simple hand-watering in the 60 L fabric pots made for an easy grow. The overall impression was of a plant that develops compact, highly resinous buds with minimal fuss once the stretch is complete.

Dense buds with pine, mint and creamy aromas

At harvest the plants were 165 cm tall, having doubled their height during bloom. The calyx-to-leaf ratio was excellent; making post-harvest work straightforward.

The quality metrics and bag appeal were outstanding:

• Resin: Abundant, covering every visible surface of the flowers and extending onto surrounding foliage.
• Smell: Distinctive pine-forest notes blended with mint and a creamy undertone.
• Structure: Compact, dense buds.

The curing process may take a few days longer than usual due to the mass per bud, as this strain is very meaty and dense due to its multiple layers of organic material. It has an exquisite and intense aroma, reminiscent of mint, pine forest, and haze. The densest buds can weigh up to 2 grams each, and the curing process reveals countless trichomes.

Special remarks and unique observations

One of the most notable traits observed by “Big.Chalas” was the ability of Kingston Punch to produce so many large, long blooms without any training techniques.

The naturally sturdy structure and limited branching made canopy management simple while still delivering a high number of productive colas.

Other plus points for future growers:

• Kingston Punch tolerates an extended vegetative period without becoming unmanageable.
• Moderate stretch (nearly doubling in height in bloom) is predictable and easy to accommodate in tents around 2m (6ft) tall.
• Resin coverage is exceptional even on lower and shaded foliage.
• The pine–mint–cream terpene profile is pronounced and remains consistent through late bloom.
• Easy-trim plants and high bag appeal make the variety attractive for both personal and small-scale commercial grows.
