Ice Cream Haze is one of the best Dutch Passion releases in recent years. Created as a collaboration between independent breeder Antonio (35+ cannabis cups in last few years) and Dutch Passion. Ice Cream Haze is available in regular cannabis seeds as well as feminised seeds. This grow used regular Ice Cream Haze seeds. Mr.PapaGanja is a leading independent grower who grows connoisseur genetics, specialising in producing only the highest quality harvests.

Achieving around a gram-per-watt is always a pleasing achievement, but this grow was all about chasing top-grade buds with a fully-loaded aroma & taste not just yield. Here are some more details about the straight-forward & easy grow. Note how frosty the plants became as bloom progressed and the beautiful blue/purple hues that developed.

Basic information:

Mr.PapaGanja grew 3 plants, two of which were Ice Cream Haze. They reached around 1m (3ft) tall in 18 litre (4 gal) soil containers. The Ice Cream Haze averaged 85g/3oz per plant with a 10-week bloom time. Full details below, along with illustrations show exactly the results that you can expect.

Strain information:

There were two main phenotype variations. Phenotype #2 was the shorter one though with a slightly heavier yield. She was leafy with gassy, spicy, fragrant and earthy aromas. She showed purple hues in the buds and leaves with the low night-time temps (16-18°C / 60-64F).

Phenotype #1 was the taller of the two. She had more of a stretchy haze structure with perfect leaf to flower ratio. Taste was of mango, sweet & fruity, gummy bears & energy drink. The leaves were purple but the buds themselves were mostly green. Cool conditions were seen in bloom during the ‘lights-off’ period, with low temps at night again with lows of 16-18°C / 60-64F.

Cannabis seed germination is the same whether using regular seeds like these Ice Cream Haze, or whether using feminised seeds / autoflower seeds. The two most reliable methods are to germinate the cannabis seeds between two moist (not soaked) cotton pads or to germinate them directly in their grow medium e.g. soil.

Mr.PapaGanja used a hybrid seed germination model. The weed seeds were first soaked in water to soften the shell and then placed between damp kitchen paper sheets. PapaGanja explains more:

Seeds were soaked in a glass of water for 12 hours, followed by another 12 hours in moistened tissues. After these 24 hours, the seeds were placed in soil and germinated in a mini greenhouse on a heating mat at around 22-24 º / 73F.

Mr.PapaGanja grew his two Ice Cream Haze plants for a 50-day period of vegetative growth. This generous period of veg growth allowed ample time for the plants to receive some cannabis topping, where the growth tip is removed to produce more growth shoots and a bushier appearance.

Note that one plant was fed with traditional nutrients. The other was grown with the ‘water-only’ approach using BioTabs slow-release organic nutrients.

The plants were topped once to ensure four beautiful main shoots. The Ice Cream Haze pheno #2 was watered with Green2016 fertilizer every time she was watered – starting on the 21st day of growth.

Ice Cream Haze pheno #1, on the other hand, was only provided with a BioTab in heavily pre-fertilised soil. Apart from this, she received no additional fertiliser via the irrigation water.

For both plants, the watering temperature was adjusted to 19°C/66F and was adjusted to pH 6.2 – 6.5

Ice Cream Haze pheno #2 also received an EC value adjustment up to 1.2 – 1.4 EC.

During bloom, temperatures sometimes dropped to 16°C / 61F at night. On average, temperatures were between 16°C and 18°C at night, and during the day, temperatures ranged between 22°C -24°C (73F). 1.5 litres / 2.5 pints of water were added every other day, with pH and temperature adjusted. For Ice Cream Haze pheno 2, the EC value was maintained at 1.8–2.0 EC until harvest.

And what a beautiful harvest it was! A medley of extravagant colour and pungent aroma complemented the dense sticky buds. And with around 1GPW (gram per watt) Ice Cream Haze delivered in good amounts.

Both Ice Cream Haze plants were dried at 16-18°C / 60-64F & 55-62% humidity for 11 days. They were then trimmed and dried for another 3-4 days in calzone boxes. The flowers were then placed in Grove Bags for storage.

Ice Cream Haze pheno #1 Ice Cream Haze pheno #2
Final height 110cm (43”) 85cm (33”)
Calyx-leaf ratio (easy trim?) Perfect to trim, really easy not much work. The best bud structure! Pheno 2 needed more time to trim, ‘bad’ Calyx-leaf ratio
Quality (Resin/Smell/Compact) Compact hard nugs. Smells like Tropicana, sweet, fruity & a bit mango. Really sticky. Compact hard nugs. Smells a bit earthier – gelato, herb, menthol & cookie dough notes.

Closing remarks from Mr.PapaGanja

Two phenotypes of Ice Cream Haze regular seeds grown by Mr.PapaGanja

The strain is more than just fantastic; it’s a real banger, with wonderful flowers, very easy to grow, forgiving of mistakes, suitable for beginners, a must-try. The color play of the leaves/buds in cool temperatures is phenomenal.

All the buds are thickly coated in resin, and the harvest results are impressive. My two phenos were very different, certainly on the level of a keeper genetics for connoisseurs.
